AFAIK, the recall iw for EGR Cooler, not EGR valve. EGR failure is quite common on the 6 cylinder diesels especially if you have been using cheap supermarket diesel. £1200 is way OTT for a simple EGR valve replacement and sounds more like the cost to replace the cooler. I would expect an EGR to be half that. So there was a reason I got this 2012 BMW X5 diesel so cheap! It was hiding a $2000 problem!! But to remove it you need to blank off the connections at each end, and also the coolant lines. I think the coolant blanks you need are 18mm.
